With a name that starts with "K," Koen fits right in! Meet Koen.Īs the weather begins to stay consistently warm, Zoo guests can expect to find Katy, Kora, and Koen rotating between their indoor and outdoor habitats in the Zoo's Australia and the Islands region. While Kora and Koen will not meet, as they are not paired for breeding, we are excited to have another addition to the Zoo's koala family. In addition to Kora turning one and becoming more independent every day, another koala, Koen, recently joined the Columbus Zoo family after moving from the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo. It has been a very exciting year for the Australia and the Islands team! She is so patient with Kora as she learns to become more independent,” said Grumney. Kora is gaining independence and is starting to spend more time away from her mother, but if she feels she has been away from her for too long, she doesn't hesitate to call out…and her mother will quickly rush to her! "Katy is a wonderful mother. After birth, the joey will crawl into its mothers pouch located on its mothers belly and attach itself to one of her teats. Baby Koalas are so tiny at birth and only measure around a quarter of an inch long. Baby Koalas are very vulnerable at birth and are hairless, blind and have no ears. While her older sister was extra sweet to her keepers and always very interested in what they were up to when servicing the koala habitat, Kora prefers to stay closer to mom and has a "sassier" attitude! "It is fun to see the different personalities koalas can have, even though they sleep up to 20 hours each day,” said Australia and The Islands keeper, Emily Grumney. A female Koalas gestation period is 35 days. Kora's older sister, Ellin, grew up at the Columbus Zoo and now resides at Palm Beach Zoo in Florida. Kora is also the second joey born to Katy. While all animals are special to the teams at the Zoo, Kora has a special place in her keepers' hearts as she is the last joey to be born from mom, Katy, and dad, Thoar.Īfter Thoar’s passing from cancer, the koala Care team came up with a special way to pay tribute to Thoar…They created a name that combined her parents' names to honor their last joey. It was something I was going to take with me to the grave." "I had never told my secret to anybody and I didn't plan on telling my secret to anybody ever. "I didn't know what to do," says a tearful Rachelle. Still, she says fear and shame prevented her from alerting authorities. She says her "heart dropped" when she found out Mancuso had a daughter. A chance encounter with a family friend informed Rachelle of the truth. For years, she thought her father had adopted a boy, who she thought would be safe from harm. "And I feel partly responsible for what happened to her, and I beat myself up about it all the time because I feel that it was my fault that I did not say anything."īecause she had lost contact with her father, Rachelle says she didn't know the details of the adoption. He offers his expert advice for how parents can protect their children: "The number one thing is: No chat rooms." Sergeant Zaglifa says his instinct told him this man was an absolute danger to children. Posing as a pedophile, Chicago area police officer Mike Zaglifa discovered Mancuso in an online chat room. Back in the states, Masha expected a nice American home with a bedroom all her own. No phone calls were made to his ex-wife or to his biological daughter. What she didn't know was the adoption agency failed to properly check her new father's background. But nothing could have been farther from the truth. ![]() Mancuso seemed like her knight in shining armor. The most popular and widely practiced of the funk styles are Locking and popping. From being a fad, it developed into a street dance style called Boogaloo in Oakland, CA, as well as a separate music genre called Latin boogaloo. It started out as a 1960s fad dance and was the subject of several songs released during that time such as "Do the Boogaloo" and "My Baby Likes to Boogaloo". Out of all of these dances, Boogaloo is one of the oldest. The funk styles refer to several street dance styles created in California in the 1970s such as roboting, bopping, hitting, locking, bustin', popping, boogaloo, strutting, sac-ing, and dime-stopping. It can also be a way to stay active in competitive dance and a way to make a living by dancing professionally. Hip-hop dance can be a form of entertainment or a hobby. Since being exposed, educational opportunities and corporate dance competitions such as World of Dance and Hip Hop International have helped maintain its presence worldwide. What distinguishes hip-hop from other forms of dance is that it is often "freestyle" (improvisational) in nature and hip-hop dance crews often engage in freestyle dance competitions-colloquially referred to as "battles".įilms, television shows, and the Internet have contributed to introducing hip-hop dance outside the United States. Though the dance is established in entertainment, including mild representation in theater, it maintains a strong presence in urban neighborhoods which has led to the creation of street dance derivatives Memphis jookin, turfing, jerkin', and krump. The commercialization of hip-hop dance continued into the 1990s and 2000s with the production of several television shows and movies such as The Grind, Planet B-Boy, Rize, StreetDance 3D, America's Best Dance Crew, Saigon Electric, the Step Up film series, and The LXD, a web series. Because of this development, hip-hop dance is practiced in both dance studios and outdoor spaces. Classically trained dancers developed these studio styles in order to create choreography from the hip-hop dances that were performed on the street. The dance industry responded with a commercial, studio-based version of hip-hop-sometimes called "new style"-and a hip-hop influenced style of jazz dance called "jazz-funk". The television show Soul Train and the 1980s films Breakin', Beat Street, and Wild Style showcased these crews and dance styles in their early stages therefore, giving hip-hop dance mainstream exposure.
